Fuse Board & Consumer Unit EICR Defects

Consumer Unit Failures on EICRs

Consumer unit defects are one of the most common reasons an EICR becomes unsatisfactory. Old fuse boards, missing RCD protection, damaged enclosures, poor labelling and incorrect circuit protection can all lead to observations on an Electrical Installation Condition Report.

BIM Electrical Group helps landlords, managing agents and property owners across London understand the issue, quote the remedial works and bring the installation back to a satisfactory condition where possible.

Physical Damage

Damaged consumer units

Cracked covers, missing blanks, loose fronts or damaged enclosures can all create safety concerns.

  • Missing blanks
  • Loose covers
  • Damaged enclosures
  • Exposed live parts
Heat Damage

Overheating and poor connections

Heat damage may indicate loose connections, overloads or poorly terminated conductors.

  • Burn marks
  • Discoloured insulation
  • Melted accessories
  • Loose terminals
Protection Issues

Incorrect circuit protection

Circuit protection must be suitable for the cable and installation arrangement.

  • Oversized breakers
  • Incorrect fuse ratings
  • Poorly altered circuits
  • Unclear arrangements

Does an old fuse board automatically fail an EICR?

No. An old fuse board does not automatically fail simply because it is old. The real question is whether the installation remains safe and adequately protected.

Age alone is not the full answer

Older consumer units are more likely to lack modern protective features, but the actual condition and safety of the installation is what matters most.

Why landlords get caught out

Many landlords only discover consumer unit issues when an EICR is requested by a tenant, letting agent or local authority.

Common EICR observation codes

  • C1: danger present
  • C2: potentially dangerous
  • C3: improvement recommended
  • FI: further investigation required

Remedial works after a failed EICR

BIM Electrical Group can quote the remedial works, complete the upgrades and provide the relevant certification needed to close out the EICR properly.
